& Kaz Kuroda Senior Business Development Manager, AusTrade,
Osaka
|
| |
|

Chris Rees and Kaz Kuroda gave an enlightening description
of their recent experiences in Japan in the aftermath
of the earthquakes and tsunami. The informal discussion
included:
- The recent visit to Japan by the Prime Minister
Julia Gillard, and a charity dinner which raised $120,000
for earthquake victims;
- Affected areas of Japan, mainly in the north are
totally devastated, areas in the south are largely
unaffected;
- Japanese government putting money aside for cleaning
and reconstruction, which is predicted to have a stimulatory
effect on the Japanese economy;
- Japan to cut overseas aid budget temporarily;
- Corporate and local level response to contraction
has been rapid, but that the national government response
has been slow;
- Japanese companies are cashed up and looking to
invest, e.g., Kirin purchased Lion Nathan;
- Japanese companies feel that they are lacking good
educated people with English skills and have started
recruiting foreigners;
- Japanese companies looking to globalize their workforce
and investing in cross-cultural and adaptive skills,
global leadership and communication.
- Strong trend of Japanese and Australian companies
collaborating to export a combination product or service
to a third country;
- Business support for an FTA with Australia still
strong.

Investment Led Trade Opportunities - Japan |
 |
| |
|
Sally Phillips, an Austrade Trade Commissioner based in Sapporo
recently visited Adelaide and gave a presentation on 'Investment
Led Trade Opportunities - Japan'. The event held on Monday
3 December 2007 was jointly hosted by Austrade and the Department
for Trade and Economic Development.
Sally presented on a phenomenon occurring in Hokkaido with
Australians investing $250 million in the past three years.
This investment is centered around the small town of Niseko,
which in recent years has received a large increase in domestic
and foreign tourists thanks largely to investment into the
town by Australian skiing and rafting fanatics. The Sydney
Morning Herald reported on this unpredented Australian
invasion last year.
The talk focused on the opportunities for Australians looking
to invest into Japan, with Sally highlighting that the current
strength of the Australian dollar and the recent continued
growth of the Japanese economy means the timing is right for
Australians interested in venturing into Japan. The presentation
was followed by discussion of the opportunities, challenges
and logistics of establishing a business in Japan.

To all distinguished guests and
fellow Council members & friends
It is with a great deal of pleasure that we of the
JABC accept the award for Small
or Emerging Chamber 2007.
Many on our Council and amongst our members have abiding
connections with Japan - and as would be expected -
many of those relationships go back a very long time
indeed.
Our Council has had an interesting history.and I thank
all of those people who have played a part in the initial
establishment of the JABC - .but it is to our current
Committee and members that I wish to pay tribute.
I thank each and every one of them for their commitment,
dedication, time, energy and passion - to work collaboratively
to re-establish our Chamber.
I wish you to note as well that our Committee consists
of a lot of young, dedicated members and I hope that
by encouraging them to lead and contribute - our Council
will be at the forefront of Chamber activity for many
years to come.
Thank you very much indeed.
