  • Affected areas of Japan, mainly in the north are totally devastated, areas in the south are largely unaffected;
  • Japanese government putting money aside for cleaning and reconstruction, which is predicted to have a stimulatory effect on the Japanese economy;
  • Japan to cut overseas aid budget temporarily;
  • Corporate and local level response to contraction has been rapid, but that the national government response has been slow;
  • Japanese companies are cashed up and looking to invest, e.g., Kirin purchased Lion Nathan;
  • Japanese companies feel that they are lacking good educated people with English skills and have started recruiting foreigners;
  • Japanese companies looking to globalize their workforce and investing in cross-cultural and adaptive skills, global leadership and communication.
  • Strong trend of Japanese and Australian companies collaborating to export a combination product or service to a third country;
  • Business support for an FTA with Australia still strong.

Next a Japan market update was presented by Paul Smith, Chair of the JABCSA, on behalf of Chris Rees, Consul General and Senior Trade Commissioner - Osaka Japan. The update focused on changes that are taking place within Japanese companies to ensure they remain relevant and competitive on a global scale. These changes include a number of prominent Japanese companies using the English language as the primary language for business. Companies are sending workers overseas for English language training, which represents an opportunity for Australian English language educators.

Simon Futo then introduced Yukiko Yasuda from Kobe Gakuin. The University of Adelaide's Professional and Continuing Education is currently accommodating 8 university study tour groups from Japan, totaling approximately 160-170 students.

Finally the audience was treated to a presentation by Duncan MacGillivray of KI Pure Grain Pty Ltd, and inventor of "Two Dogs" alcoholic lemonade. Duncan gave a brief summary of the Two Dogs story:

  • Journey originally began in 1993/94 when the concept was invented;
  • Inchcape Liquor Marketing was originally approached to distribute, agreed that 50,000 cases would be produced in 1st year of sales;
  • Sales of 50,000 cases were achieved in 1st month, actually sales for 1st year were 360,000 cases;
  • Coopers were approached to brew and bottle;
  • When Coopers reached capacity, Boags were contracted, then finally Lyon Nathan for extra capacity;
  • Finally Pernod Ricard agreed to distribute Two Dogs and subsequently purchased the brand for $18M.

    JABCSA Presentation

The Japan Australia Business Council of SA presentation by Prof Purnendra Jain (of University of Adelaide) entitled "The DPJ and Hatoyama Government: Opportunities and Challenges" was hosted at the Hindmarsh Brewery. Prof Jain gave an entertaining, interesting and thought provoking presentation on the state-of-play within the current Japanese government.

Prof Purnendra Jain

A number of points were addressed including:
  • Japan still has the second largest economy in the world
  • There have been 5 Japanese Prime Ministers over the past 4 year
  • DPJ took power in 2009 after 50 years of LDP rule in Japan
  • Hatoyama failure ultimately caused by his inability to fulfil a promise to move the US airbase in Okinawa
  • Current Japanese international relations are focused on the US and Asia, in particular China
  • Japan public debt is at approx. 200% of GDP, however this is domestic debt not external

Discussion also covered negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement between Australia and Japan. Points addressed by Prof Jain included:

  • Relatively slow progress on negotiations due to a change in focus and priorities in Japan, and the impact of Australia's stance on whaling
  • Australia seen as a strategic partner in terms of defence
  • Business between South Australia and Japan on the decline, but opportunities still exist

New members were introduced, Craig Ellis, Senior Associate, Di Rosa Lawyers and Scott Searles, Business Development, Port of Melbourne.

The night proved to be highly successful, with lively discussion following the presentation and networking in general. The JABCSA would like to thank Constellation Wines for their contributions of wine - your support is greatly appreciated. The JABCSA would also like to thank Aki's Hands for providing the authentic Japanese cuisine catering for the event.

    Investment Led Trade Opportunities - Japan

Sally Phillips, an Austrade Trade Commissioner based in Sapporo recently visited Adelaide and gave a presentation on 'Investment Led Trade Opportunities - Japan'. The event held on Monday 3 December 2007 was jointly hosted by Austrade and the Department for Trade and Economic Development.

Sally presented on a phenomenon occurring in Hokkaido with Australians investing $250 million in the past three years. This investment is centered around the small town of Niseko, which in recent years has received a large increase in domestic and foreign tourists thanks largely to investment into the town by Australian skiing and rafting fanatics. The Sydney Morning Herald reported on this unpredented Australian invasion last year.

The talk focused on the opportunities for Australians looking to invest into Japan, with Sally highlighting that the current strength of the Australian dollar and the recent continued growth of the Japanese economy means the timing is right for Australians interested in venturing into Japan. The presentation was followed by discussion of the opportunities, challenges and logistics of establishing a business in Japan.

Sally's slideshow can be accessed from the Austrade webpage

To all distinguished guests and fellow Council members & friends

It is with a great deal of pleasure that we of the JABC accept the award for Small or Emerging Chamber 2007.

Many on our Council and amongst our members have abiding connections with Japan - and as would be expected - many of those relationships go back a very long time indeed.

Our Council has had an interesting history.and I thank all of those people who have played a part in the initial establishment of the JABC - .but it is to our current Committee and members that I wish to pay tribute.

I thank each and every one of them for their commitment, dedication, time, energy and passion - to work collaboratively to re-establish our Chamber.

I wish you to note as well that our Committee consists of a lot of young, dedicated members and I hope that by encouraging them to lead and contribute - our Council will be at the forefront of Chamber activity for many years to come.

Thank you very much indeed.
